3 Biggest Party Planning Mistakes
“Where did I go wrong?!”
Throwing a house party for the first time seems like a simple task. After all, you just invite some friends, get some food, and that’s it… right? Unfortunately, hosting a successful shindig that you and your guests will remember for a long time requires a bit more involvement and planning.
In most of our blogs, we give you tips and strategies for planning, preparing, and hosting your next house party. This time, we’re taking a different approach. Here are the AUXGOD team’s 3 biggest party planning mistakes that you should avoid when getting ready for your next celebration!
1. Inviting Too Few or Too Many People
Everyone’s heard the saying, “Two is company, but three is a crowd.” That begs the question: How many is a party?
Although there’s no hard and fast rule for determining the number of friends you invite to your upcoming celebration, there are two main factors that will influence your decision: the size of your house and the type of party you’re planning.
House Size
The amount of space that you have for your party will have a huge impact on how many people you invite. Naturally, a smaller party space will force you to have a tighter guest list. Take a look at your place and try to figure out how many people you can fit before your party becomes too cramped. There’s nothing wrong with an intimate celebration, but your guests must have space to move around freely without tripping over someone every few yards.
If you’re having trouble visualizing your area (or if you just like math), you can take the total square footage of your house and divide it by 36 to find how many people can comfortably fit in the area. For example, if you have a 20x30ft living room, your total square footage is 600 square feet. So you can reliably fit 18-19 people into the room (600/36)!
Party Type
Different types of parties lend themselves to different amounts of potential guests. For example, a cozy dinner party can thrive with just a couple of guests, whereas a summertime pool party will need a few more people to make it feel alive. In general, the more guests you invite to your shindig, the louder and rowdier it will become!
With that being said, there is such a thing as too many people. If you overdo it with your guest list, your event can quickly get out of hand once the music starts playing and drinks start flowing. If you’re throwing a big function that has the potential to get out of hand, make sure you invite a couple of your ultra-responsible friends to help you hold the line in case your party accidentally descends into anarchy!
In general, a guest list of between 10-25 guests is usually a great range for any type of party or setting. It gives your guests enough company to chat with and keep things fresh, but the group is still small enough to keep under relative control.
2. Being Unprepared for the Aftermath
When most people plan a party, they often forget to prepare for the next day following their party. Although tidying up your place in the aftermath of a shindig isn’t as glamorous as partying with your friends the night before, it’s still a crucial thing to consider. After all, throwing a party is awesome, but having that party linger in your house for a week isn’t anyone’s idea of fun.
No matter what party you throw, it’s almost guaranteed that someone will drop food or spill drinks on your furniture or floor. When you wake up the next morning, you want to already have the tools you’ll need. The last thing you want is to go to the superstore hungover looking for a mop or roll of paper towels. The better you prepare before your party, the easier it will be to deal with the aftermath.

3. Forgetting About Entertainment
Entertainment is the heart of your party. The music, games, and activities at your next shindig can make or break the evening, so it is important to think about this from the beginning. As a host, it’s your job to keep your party lively and guests engaged. Make sure you have a plan for fun, unique activities that will keep your friends entertained throughout the night.
